Calibmogenium deemed highest fundraiser in WA

Well done to all who participated in Movember by growing a mo and raised funds for men’s health. The Movember event raises awareness around men’s health issues and funds for carefully selected beneficiary partners that are also charitable organisations, with a focus on prostate cancer and depression in men.
45 Calibre Engenium crew known as ‘Calibmogenium’ raised over $20,500, ranking them as the highest fundraising team in Western Australia. This was a fantastic effort given. Calibmogenium competed with other teams of up to 250 people.
Congratulations to everyone on their fundraising efforts and a big thank you to the Calibmogenium team for raising money for The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) and for Beyond Blue.
Calibre Engenium - Finalist for 2008 Bulk Handling Awards

Calibre Engenium was recently nominated as Finalist for the Supplier of the Year Award in the medium to large category at the 2008 Australian Bulk Handling Awards. The Supplier of the Year award is an award recognising exemplary service, performance and customer commitment by a supplier to the Australian bulk handling sector. This is the first time Calibre Engenium has taken part in this award.
Calibre Engenium has successfully completed major rail projects throughout Western Australia. The company is also committed to achieving excellence in all aspects of Environmental Management and to meet and exceed objectives set by regulatory authorities and clients.
RGP5 fundraiser for Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue

November’s fundraising morning tea was organised by the RGP5 project team. The beneficiary this month was the Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group, a dedicated group of volunteers from all walks of life who assist the Authority appointed by the Western Australian Government in Sea Search and Rescue operations in the Northern suburbs of Perth.
The Project Controls Team raised $168.00 which will be kindly matched by Calibre Engenium Joint Venture. Thanks and appreciation goes to all staff at the projects controls team for their fantastic support and generosity.
Morning Tea for a worthy cause...

At Calibre Engenium each month a Fundraising Morning Tea is organised to raise money for charity. This month, the Bridges Team hosted the event and staff were asked to make a gold coin donation to participate.
As a result, $450 was raised and donated to the Royal Flying Doctors Service. Previous beneficiaries have included Beyond Blue, a community based organisation aimed at raising awareness and respond effectively towards depression.
This initiative will be an ongoing event, with a different team selected each month to organise the morning tea and donations going to a charity of their choice.
Fundraising Fever Hits Brockman!

Our hard working folk at the Brockman 4 site in the Pilbara region of Western Australia pulled out all stops whilst raising money for the Red Cross recently. As well as money raised from the staff onsite, companies including Rio Tinto, NRW, CCR, Portacomm, Ausco and ESS all contributed to raise a final amount of a whopping $12,720 in the space of a few short hours.
Infrastructure Engineer David Hudson, announced he would also lose his locks in return for donations to the Starlight Foundation. Within 30 minutes over $18,500 was raised and after further donations from other team members and companies, a grand total of over $23,500 was collected. Incredible effort! Whilst on a fundraising roll, a quiz night was also held on site where over $10,000 was raised for the Cancer Council.
5 million hours Lost Time Injury Free - Our safety success is no accident

The Calibre Global group of companies have achieved a significant milestone by reaching 5 million hours Lost Time Injury Free. This milestone could not have been achieved without a culture of “safety first” and a team of people who look out for each other.
Staff across Calibre celebrated this special occasion with a morning tea and received a commemorative gift. Safety continues to be our number one priority as we march towards 10 million hours LTI free.

Young Engineers Australia Conference

On Wednesday 10th September the national Young Engineers Summit was held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
A record attendance of over 200 delegates (some of which included Calibre Young Engineers) were there to partake in this year’s theme “The Universal Engineer”. A selection of high profile keynote speakers from industry, interactive sessions, networking opportunities and a poster session were all part of the day’s activities.
Rail Engineering's finest at CORE 2008

Over 900 delegates attended this year’s CORE (Conference of Rail Engineering) held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on 7-10 September.
The conference provided Calibre Engenium with a unique opportunity to showcase it’s capabilities to the world’s rail engineering community.
This year's conference theme - Rail, the core of integrated transport - reflected the growing role of rail as an integrated transport system, and as one of the solutions to the environmental and population pressures faced by modern society.
The role of rail in moving freight cannot be overstated, and the conference also focused on rail as a major bulk hauler.
Calibre Engenium and OPR work on rail corridor options for Oakajee Port

OPR (Oakajee Port & Rail) has been awarded the preferred proponent status for the development of the Port at Oakajee. Calibre Engenium is working closely with OPR on the development of several railway routes that will service both the mines to the south and the north and these routes will be passed onto Government for a decision on an appropriate railway corridor. This decision is expected in November 2008.

Calibre Engenium was engaged August 2008 to undertake a Pre-Feasibility Study for a standard gauge heavy haul railway to service iron ore reserves at Davison Creek and Robertson Range prospects with options to connect with existing railway networks in the region.
Several railway alignment strategies have been considered between the proposed mines and existing networks with up to 140km of track alignment. The study also include options that give consideration to other mining prospects in the vicinity providing a total track alignment of approximately 180km. The scope of the railway includes a communication backbone for voice and data (including capacity for the mine’s requirements), signalling for train control and asset protection on track, earthwork, drainage, track structure, and temporary facilities and infrastructure associated with construction of the railway, including accommodation and access roads.
RGP5 Rail Project for BHPBIO

Work is continuing on the Definition Phase Study for this project which comprises 280 km of mainline rail duplication.
In parallel the execution phase has commenced. Work is proceeding on detailed engineering, long lead procurement, environmental approvals and contracting. Good progress is being made by a hardworking and enthusiastic project team.
Calibre acquire new Brisbane office to cater for expansion

Acquisition of the new premises at 545 Queen Street, Brisbane will enable Calibre to meet its expansion plans in response to the growing demand for our capabilities, particularly in Queensland.
"We considered a range of office premises in Brisbane and chose 545 Queen Street as we feel its modern "vibe" is a great fit to the Calibre culture. We are presently undergoing a rigorous recruitment drive in Brisbane, and we are sure both our present and future employees will enjoy the environment at 545 Queen Street", said Gerard Madam, Operation Manager (Queensland). "We are here for the long term. We have just signed a 10 year lease for new office premises of 2000m2 at 545 Queen St to accommodate approximately 200 personnel", he added.
In late 2006, Calibre established a presence in Queensland with the acquisition of our office at 444 Queen St.

Calibre teams take lead in Global MERIT competition

MERIT is an acronym for Management, Enterprise, Risk, Innovation and Teamwork.
It is a computer simulation where participants from around the world learn how to manage their own fictional construction company by making decisions that affect the key functions of the business, such as marketing, tendering, finance, overheads, personnel and construction, and all in a 'safe' but realistic and competitive environment.
This year Calibre has three teams in the competition and with only a few weeks to go they're leading the pack.
In 1st position with 2,959 points is X-Calibre led by Vinzi Carcione, up 9% from last week.
In 2nd position and 10 points closer to the lead with 2,930 points is Stop, Calibrate and Listen led by Patrick Scanlon, also up 9% from last week.
Climbing rapidly and now in 13th position with 2,663 points is Soks And Jocks led by Sok Hong Teow, up 13% from last week.
Our teams have an overall average of 2,851 leading the nearest corporate rivals with 2,681 points.
Lang Hancock Railway near completion

This project involved the engineering procurement and construction management of 58kms of new heavy haul rail and an additional 3 sidings. A permanent accommodation village was also built as well as 40km of access road. Calibre Engenium undertook the project from feasibility through design and construction management to final commissioning.
Now nearing completion with only demobilisation to go, the Lang Hancock Railway project will finish ahead of schedule, under budget with excellent safety and environmental outcomes.

Calibre Engenium reached another significant milestone recently, with a workforce now numbering in excess of 150 people, along with an order book of more than $5 billion of capital projects in various stages of development.
Formed as a joint venture between Calibre Rail and Engenium in 2005, the company has had a significant hand in designing and delivering most major rail infrastructure projects in the Pilbara, since its inception.
"To date we have designed and laid more track throughout the Pilbara in recent years than any other engineering firm, and we're helping our clients to get their commodities from pit to port in the most efficient manner possible", said Greg O'Rourke, Managing Director.
Calibre Engenium manages rail infrastructure projects through various stages of development, from initial feasibility and definitive engineering studies, through to detailed design, documentation, construction management, commissioning and handover.
Prior to the formation of Calibre Engenium, personnel now involved in key roles within the company were involved in Brockman 2 Railway for Rio Tinto (42kms), Marandoo Railway (50kms), Yandi Railway (150kms), West Angelas Railway (70kms), Gull to Tunkawanna Rail Duplication, Mining Area C Railway (42kms), and Rapid Growth Project Railway Stage 2 (50kms). Since inception Calibre Engenium has delivered the Tunkawanna to Rosella Rail Duplication (95km) and Lang Hancock Railway (58km), Yandi 36 Sidings and Yandi JSE Sidings and Loop Duplication for Rio Tinto. It is currently involved in the delivery of the Mesa A Railway and Brockman 4 Railways for Rio Tinto, the Pilbara 320 Railway Study for Rio Tinto, the Jack Hills Railway Study for Crosslands Resources and the RGP5 Rail Project for BHP Billiton.
Calibre Engenium continues to work on some of Australia's most significant rail infrastructure projects.

Jack Hills Iron Ore project - Feasibility Study update

Calibre Engenium has completed the first pass of the railway alignment optimisation analysis between rail chainage 50km to the Jack Hills mine (rail chainage 490 km).
Drainage design work continues in a southerly direction from the mine, with approximately 100 km of preliminary drainage design completed to date.
The preliminary rail loop design for the mine site was notionally accepted by Calibre Projects and will be used as the initial basis for mine infrastructure layout that will be sent to the client for agreement.
Calibre Engenium wins 320 Rail Study

Calibre Engenium was recently awarded the 320 Rail Preliminary Engineering Study for Rio Tinto.
This is a significant study and involves the duplication of some 185 km of duplication further upgrades to the existing duplicated mainline and new ore car maintenance workshop.
These works are key for Rio Tinto to meet its Iron Ore Export targets and Calibre Engenium is proud to be part of this exciting new project.
Mesa A on track

The Mesa A project involves 49km of new heavy haul rail track including new rail yard and loop. Works included over 2 million m3 of earthworks, 50km of fibre optic cable, implementation of an ICSS signalling system and a 240m bridge over the Robe River. Calibre Engenium is currently undertaking for Rio Tinto Iron Ore Expansion Projects, the engineering, design, procurement, project management, construction management, commissioning services and all other technical services necessary for the execution of the Mesa A Railway project works.
Calibre Engenium's scope of work has now increased to include the borefield development and pipeline, and the 33kv overhead powerline for the mine operations.
The 80 man exploration camp is now complete and operational.
"Movember" in full swing

The month of Movember has been embraced by many Calibre Engenium staff and is responsible for seeing David Boon inspired Mo's being groomed during the month of November by brave participants (known as Mo Bros and Mo Sisters).
Movember is a charity event where Mo Bros/Sisters register at the start of the month with a clean shaven face, then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache and along the way raise as much money and awareness about male health issues as possible.
The money raised by Movember is donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyond blue - the national depression initiative, which will use the funds to create awareness, fund research and increase support networks for those men who suffer from prostate cancer and male depression.
RGP5 Rail team powering ahead

Calibre Engenium was awarded the RGP5 Selection Phase Study for BHP Billiton on June 1. The Selection Phase Study is now complete and the project is now in a Value Improvement Phase prior to entering the Definition Phase.
The project will comprise some 310 km of new railway, some in extremely challenging terrain. It will also include a new operating system for the railway and is the biggest thing that has been done to the rail network since they built the original line. Additionally the project includes 17 bridges, 11km of new culverts and 510,000 sleepers.
